Logistec plays key role
in sustainable transportation alternatives

Logistec Stevedoring Inc. has played an instrumental role in establishing sustainable transportation alternatives for its clients. As an example, it helped launch a short-sea shipping initiative for a major aluminum company located on Quebec's North Shore.

As the result of a partnership struck among the aluminum producer, a marine transportation company and Logistec, aluminum sows are now loaded aboard a barge in Sept-Îles and delivered directly to destinations within the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system.

"Logistec played a key role in this `blue highway' initiative that has provided the aluminum company with an environmentally sound and true `green' shipping option,” said George Di Sante, Logistec's vice-president of market development. "By moving part of its production to the water mode, the company is optimizing the use of the St. Lawrence River as a natural highway, helping to minimize the impact of heavy trucks on roads and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.”

The sows were originally transferred to a Logistec-operated distribution centre in the Port of Trois-Rivières, on the St. Lawrence River. Product distribution has since grown and now comprises other destinations on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence waterway.
